When a pest problem involves shared space

A useful building conversation separates direct sightings, access permissions and the tasks included in a proposal.

Keep observations separate

Record the affected room in your unit and any sightings in common spaces separately. Two sightings may be related, but location alone does not establish a route. A clear record helps avoid treating an assumption as a finding.

Identify the access contact

Ask who can arrange entry to utility areas, storage rooms or other relevant spaces. Residents should not enter restricted areas to investigate. Tell the service contact which parts of the building can be assessed and which need additional permission.

Agree on the scope

Ask whether the proposal covers one unit or wider areas, who will receive preparation instructions and how follow-up observations should be shared. NYC Health has guidance for building owners on pest prevention and the conditions that support activity.

  • Name one contact for access and preparation instructions
  • List each affected unit or shared space separately
  • Ask who receives findings and handles repair recommendations
